Megla started bringing people interesting in importing from India about 9 years ago.
Sure. So, um, I’ve been in the sourcing industry for about 19 years. I worked in, uh, India and I worked in, um, the Philippines that I was raised in China for about nine years. And currently, I’m in Singapore. So, um, I’ve got a good, uh, you know, I’ve got a good experience in how, um, products are manufactured and how the export industries work in Asia. Um, so, uh, you know, just as, as you know, I’ve been working with global sources for all this while, and I’ve also been organizing the global sources summit for e-commerce sellers in Hong Kong. And recently I’ve started my own venture, which is, uh, to organize, uh, this India sourcing trip. And one of the reasons I did this was, um, a lot of people were actually, you know, sourcing from China, but then when the tariffs came along, then there was a lot of interest in exploring alternative markets.
One of the markets people are looking to export from is India. Megla started a trade Travel Trip for people interested in exporting from India. There seems to be a lot of interest in South India. I visited India to attend one of the trade shows there to see what was going on.
I talked to a lot of suppliers and service providers and, uh, you know, the fair organizers. And, uh, what I realized was that there are a lot of private label opportunities in India, but not a lot of Amazon sellers are, you know, going there to explore those opportunities. The few sellers who are going there, they are actually very profitable because the products from India are a potentially higher value and they can potentially be higher profit products. So the, the, you know, the centers who are sourcing these types of products, um, are actually quite profitable. And these products are also not very competitive because, um, you know, most sellers are sourcing, um, typical products that are manufactured in China, for example, electronics, or, you know, spatulas and things like that. But the products that are manufactured in India are very unique and very special. So not a lot of, uh, sellers are selling those products and there’s less competition for those products too. So yeah, I mean, that’s how the trip started. And I’ve also written an ebook on how to source from India, because I realized that there is really no information about, uh, how you source from India.
So what’s unique about you that you have a very strong background in sourcing from China. You have a big knowledge about that, and now you have knowledge about India. Can you tell us a little bit, the difference in maybe there is a cultural difference or maybe there is a price difference? Maybe India is my expensive, or maybe, I don’t know, India is less developed in technology. Do you, can you name a few differences between sourcing from China and from India?
Sure. So one of the biggest differences assaulting from China and India is the product range that’s available. Whereas in China, you can source any product possible, right? I mean, from the smallest of needles to the biggest machinery they’re available in China, but India is competitive in certain types of products. And these are more, you know, like the handcrafted products or products that have more, um, uh, manual work involved. Those are the types of products that India is strong and also products that are made from natural materials, such as cotton, wool, jute, wood metal. Those are the products that India is strong. And in terms of categories, you know, there’s home decor, which is a big category from India and then apparel specifically cost and apparel. That is a huge category to, uh, genuine leather. That’s another popular product, and it’s also more competitive than China.
Um, so that’s one big difference. The product categories that are available to source. Another difference I see is that, whereas in China, you will see that production is more automated and there are larger production facilities. It’s done on a very large scale in India. Most of the factories are smaller scale and production is either high handcrafted, or a lot of the processes are done manually. There are of course, a lot of automated facilities as well, but those are for products that Amazon sellers would not typically source like, you know, automobiles, for example, or some sort of machinery electronic components. Another difference I see is that, uh, logistics specifically for Amazon SBA are not very developed in India yet. So the freight forwarders, for example, they are not very familiar with Amazon FBA requirements. Whereas in China, it’s very easy for Amazon sellers to source, you know, go, go on a supplier directly like Alibaba, global sources and just place an order.

And then most of the times the supplier will just do the shipping for you. And you won’t even have to worry about how the shipment is reaching Amazon FBA. Whereas in India, you have to work with a freight forwarder separately, and then you have to manage the entire shipment yourself. We’re monitoring the entire shipment from the factory to Amazon FBA. So I feel that India is maybe where China was three to four years ago in terms of Amazon FBA, like most suppliers and service providers are still learning the various requirements of Amazon FBA. So that’s another thing. And then I also feel that, um, because there’s not a lot of information available about how to source from India, the barrier to entry is higher, you know, for sourcing. Whereas in China, there are so many blogs and YouTube videos and tutorials and experts, and there’s a lot of information available and anybody can solve from China. It’s very easy, but in India it’s a bit more difficult. And so that’s also an advantage for sellers who are willing to go the extra mile to take the time and effort to learn how to source from India, you know, they would be at an advantage. So yeah, those are the few differences that I see between India and China
are there. I remember when people saw us from China, but as certain regions good in certain types of products, I think. And the, is it something similar in India? Let’s say that the South Eastern India is better in certain products or,
yeah, absolutely. It’s exactly the same in India as well. So there are certain cities that specialize in certain types of materials. For example, there’s one city in the North of India that specializes in metal products. So specifically bras and iron and all of those things. So they will do know home deck or garden implements or, uh, Christmas decorations, for example, but all the products are made of metal. And another city specializes in wooden products and there’s a separate production hub for, uh, you know, carpets and drugs, those kinds of products. And then textile and apparel they’re manufactured all over the country, but there are different styles, um, in each region or each state. Uh, for example, if you want, you know, cotton apparel, those factories are typically in the South of India, but if you want more embroidered and fancier kind of fabrics, those will be found in the North of India.
Can you tell us a little bit about your India sourcing trip? When is it happening and how long does it will take and where people will be going to?
Okay. So for the India sourcing trip, it is basically a six days, six nights and seven days trip to, um, to Delhi, which is the capital of India. It is a North India. The trip will be happening in October and, uh, the trip is organized around a sourcing fair called the Indian handicrafts and gifts fair. This is one of the most important export fairs in India. Uh, there are about 3000 exhibitors at this show. And the good thing about, uh, about the show is that all exhibitors are actually export focus. So they, uh, they understand the requirements of import markets very well. They, uh, the designs that they have are based on the preferences of, um, you know, buyers in overseas markets. So this is very important when you’re sourcing from India, you want to make sure that the suppliers are export focused. So, um, so yeah, 3000 exhibitors, all export focused and they manufacture a range of, uh, products such as home decor and, um, you know, carpets and tableware kitchen where all of the key product categories that India is strong.
And, and, um, so what I’ve done is I’ve got a group of coaches together. Like these are, uh, coaches that specialize in India sourcing as well as some e-commerce coaches from the U S and Australia. And these coaches are going to be providing some training during the trip as well, because I realize that there’s not a lot of information available about how to source from India. So, um, you know, these, these India sourcing coaches specifically will provide information on things like how to find suppliers in India, how to best suppliers, how to do quality control, how to manage logistics and all the different aspects that are, um, you know, needed for someone to start sourcing from India. So the objective of the trip is to provide attendees with the knowledge information, the tools and the connections that they need to source any product from India.
The way the trip is structured is, um, uh, when we arrived there, then on the first day, there is a whole day of presentations. So it’s like a mini conference that we’re doing a one day conference where there’ll be presentations by different speakers, um, mostly India sourcing experts. And then we attended the trade show on three days and, uh, it’s a guided tour of the trade show. So we will teach attendees how to talk to suppliers, how to gather information, how to take photos and everything. And, uh, during those three days in the afternoons, we will have more presentations, uh, again, related to, uh, sourcing from India. And then on the third day, we will also visit a factory, uh, that is in Delhi itself. And apart from that, we will also have a cultural program. This is basically a dance program that is exclusively organized, but for our group. And, um, and then we also, uh, on the fifth day of the trip, we will, um, go to Agra, which is basically where Tasmania is. So we will visit Taj mail, which is one of the seven wonders of the world. So, um, yeah, I mean, this is, you know, a sourcing plus learning plus cultural, uh, sourcing guidance, or,
but doing preparation of this trip, you obviously talked to some, uh, Amazon sellers who are already sourcing from India. And you mentioned that, can you tell a few, a few case study examples of, uh, how, how successful are they by bringing products from India?
Yeah, definitely. So actually there’s this one, um, seller from who is sourcing products from India and she is very successful. So she started selling on Amazon about two and a half years ago. She started sourcing from China. Initially she launched about eight products from China and, uh, she realized that there’s a lot of competition and she wasn’t getting a lot of sales and listening to getting hijacked and, uh, you know, it wasn’t, uh, it wasn’t everything she, she had hoped for. And then she discovered, uh, this, uh, supplier from India by chance, actually, she was in Hong Kong attending a trade show. And, uh, she saw this Indian supplier there and she thought the products were very unique and she was, you know, kind of attracted to the product. She started talking to the supplier and then she placed an order like a test order. And those products did very well on Amazon.
And then gradually she increased the amount of products that she was sourcing from India. And, uh, currently she’s, uh, stopped all of her products from China and she’s only sourcing products from India. And, um, you know, what I found really impressive was that her profitability was quite high, you know, for e-commerce sellers, they mostly talk about their revenues. They say that we are, Oh, we’re a six figure seller, seven figure seller. But in terms of profit, they don’t have very much high profits because, uh, you know, most product categories are so competitive on Amazon and then you have to pay all the Amazon fees and PPC, and there’s hardly anything left for you. But for her, she’s actually, um, on track to do a hundred thousand dollars in profit per year. Um, you know, just the products that she’s salting from, from India now, and she’s expanding her product line from India.
So that’s something to take note of, you know, when you’re sourcing from India, then, um, the products have higher perceived value and they can be more profitable. And in fact, um, one of the other coaches who’s joining us on this trip, uh, Tim Jordan, uh, he runs this group called private label Legion. And, um, you know, he himself, uh, is, is a very successful seller. And he has recently started sourcing some products from India and he’s seen some success and he’s very impressed with the quality and the prices and all that he’s getting, when you work with Indian manufacturers, is it much user with a language? Do people speak good English?
Yeah. In fact, that’s one of the benefits, I would say, a sourcing from India because most suppliers would speak English. Of course the accents would be a bit different, you know, as like from the North to the South. So that may be a challenge, but yeah, by and large, most people speak English. And in fact, you know, in India, there are about 22 official languages. So English is the second official language and it actually helps, um, Indians communicate with each other. So, yeah, that’s very, uh, you know, that’s one of the benefits of sourcing from India that that language is, is not a barrier in communication is definitely smooth.
